Crawl Depth

Crawl depth is the number of link clicks it takes to reach a page from the homepage or another entry point. A page linked directly from the homepage has a depth of one; a page four navigation steps away has a depth of four.

Depth matters because crawlers and users both reach shallow pages more easily. Pages buried many clicks deep get crawled less often and can be treated as less important, which slows indexing. As a general guideline, keep important content within about three clicks of the homepage.

You reduce effective depth with good internal linking, clear navigation, hub pages, and breadcrumbs. A sitemap lists deep URLs directly, which helps discovery, but it does not replace a shallow, well-linked structure — depth still influences how a page is valued and how frequently it is recrawled.
